Mom, I’d like to put on a play at the kids’ school.  Would you be able to play piano for me?”  That was how it all began, way back 1992.  Mom and I were a great team.  I had the ideas, and she had the gift of music.  As a piano teacher for over 20 years, she loved working with kids and teaching them music.

As Young Actors’ Theatre evolved and grew, Mom was there playing for every rehearsal and every performance.  Fondly referred to as “Nana,” students were always happy to see her when they arrived at the rehearsals.  Mom loved watching the kids perform and blossom.

The Harriet Szafranski Memorial Scholarship has been established to honor Mom as one of the co-founders of Young Actors’ Theatre (YAT).  Mom loved YAT and everything we stand for.  She was so proud of it and what we created.  Even when she wasn’t able to play piano for us any more, she attended every single show.   So it seems most fitting that three years after her passing, we are finally able to honor her in a way that she deserves.

Grant funds from The Harriet Szafranski Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a YAT student or students with planned advancement toward a degree in performing arts or music education
